This year for the first time ever I decided to take part in Portuguese Championship called Kayak Bass Fishing Championship. Competition was divided into two rounds, at two different lakes. First one took place in June at the Agueira Dam lake, the second one happened in September, and the Torrão Dam fishery was in use. The only species that was score-valid in that contest was the black bass sized at least 24 cm. Only top 5 fish caught in one day were being counted towards the final score.
First round of the contest took place on 8th of June at the previously mentioned Agueira Dam lake, that is located in central Portugal. The fishery was nearly completely unknown to me therefore I was really concerned about my final result. As it turned out later-on, the day was not easy to any participant at all. At the end of a round each angler only submitted two fish for the official measurement! Personally, I managed to land 3 fish, yet only one of them reached the minimal size required. Despite that, given such tough conditions, the result came out to be sufficient in order to finish at the second place, having scored a fish weighing 480 grams. That day I angled using Specialized Bass Cast rod paired up with the Proclaim reel and the Bee lure.
Second round of Championship took place at the fishery where I angle daily, therefore I felt much more optimistic about it. Contest took place on 15th of September at the Torrão Dam fishery – a lake located in the northern Portugal. That day fish were much more active and it was much easier to fight for precious points. I personally caught 4 full-sized ones that had total weight of 3030 grams. Due to that result I managed to finish first after the second round and take the leading position in general classification, winning the entire Kayak Bass Fishing Championship.
It was a great achievement that meant a lot to me, especially given that it was my first start in that contest. During the second round, nearly entire time I was using only one rig. It was a Kamisori Perch rod armed with a Black Crystal reel and a really effective Saira lure. Such setup very positively affected effectiveness, quality and pleasure coming from the angling itself and resulted with that amazing final score.
It was a really great experience that provided me with lots of positive energy, and also ended up in the most positive way possible way! Mikado gear was a great deal of support in that situation, as it turned out to be the most effective weapon of the Championship. Solutions offered and trust that I could put in the gear in key moments really boosted my confidence; it is very important – especially during competition.
