Last year was really harsh to us. Low level of water in rivers and high temperatures completely changed the places we used to know. Adjustments to new challenges were virtually endless. Trials that our equipment went through were just awfully hard. Let’s get to the point here, as I would like to tell you a bit about few items that found permanent spot in our menu.
Let me start with the rods:
Cat Territory Station Unlimited 300 and 330 – it is a rod dedicated for stationary fishing techniques. Casting weight 300 or 330 to 400 g. Full parabolic deflection provides hauling comfort and enough spare power to make your jaw drop. It is a perfect rod for Polish conditions – not too stiff, but not too wobbly either. I think that it is a product really worth trying and it will not disappoint a potential owner.
Cat Territory Vertical – this rod was available in two versions: 180 and 210 cm with a casting weight between 100 and 200 g. We decided to go with our preferences and chose 180 cm. The rod seems to be made to please an eye, sturdy, feels just about right when handled. The amount of joy that this rod provided us with, is hardly possible to get even in an amusement park. The rod seems to be made for the beginners. Even with the 110 cm fish it shows a beautiful parabolic shape, while the hauling is very dynamic and intense. Let me leave some space for your imagination by not mentioning what is happening when it is clashed with bigger fish. I need to mention though, that the rod managed to safely yet forcefully haul a 210 cm fish. That should leave no concerns about the spare power stored in the blank. It is a must have item for those who start their adventure with catfish angling.
Cat Territory Drift/Clonk... Well, that definitely is the rod, that got the most of our attention. Here we also have two options to choose from: 200 and 220 cm and in both cases – casting weight 160 – 400 g. Again, we decided to go for the shorter version – strictly personal preferences. In contrary to Vertical, this pole has an immense power. Here the 110 cm long catfish will not even stimulate its full parabolic deflection to show up. It definitely is a rod for more advanced users who know how and where to look for large catfish. During our autumn Ebro trip those rods were given no time to rest. Along with the number of successful hauls, the bigger fish started to show. We collectively agreed that the only reliable test of a rod has to be based on the forceful hauling of a fish exceeding 2 m of length, with maximum possible drag. We did as we agreed. Power ratio of drift/clonk made us speechless! Stopping fish exceeding 220 cm was not impossible at all, while hauling with your entire back force did not even make them even blink. I almost forgot about the aesthetic aspect. Just as in case of Vertical, the Cat Territory drift/clonk is made in a flawless manner. Nothing to add, nothing to take away. Every experienced catfish angler needs to try it out and feel that raw power.
Ace Hunter 8008 – that was our choice for the stationary methods. Solid construction with smooth action. Size of the reel allows to spool around 200 m of braid 0.50 thick, which is a perfect size for rivers and lakes. You may try to use such a combo in the open waters, yet I would not risk it for longer casts. Huge advantage of the reel is its compact size. It really is quite small for the stationary method equipment. Strong brake and sturdy composition surprised us in a positive way. The reel will stay in our secret lab for a long time – that’s for sure.
Amok – available sizes are 5512 and 6612. The larger version premiered only in 2019 so we were torturing the smaller one. Really interesting yet raw design, that fits great the Cat Territory series, looked awesome with the Vertical and drift/clonk rods. I will not tell much about the reel itself, as it did not make me skip a heartbeat… It is strong and has a perfectly adjusted for the method, precise front brake. Its capacity is not that important to us, as we are actively angling from the floating device. While torturing the Amok reels by the Rio Ebro, we spooled braids 0.70 thick and the drag was set to maximum. There was not a single second, when I considered if the reel will make it or not. Pure perfection! Every catfish hunter should try it!
Cat Territory Octa Braid – a perfect 8-carrier main line, perfect for both active and stationary methods. Insanely powerful, available in two colours: Yellow and Green. Thicknesses available: 0.40-0.70. A permanent spot in our toolboxes.
Cat Territory Octa Braid (leader making one) – in this case we can choose between 1.0 and 1.2 mm thickness. Available in Green. Every catfish rig should be protected with a short piece of such braid, that also becomes its perfect crown. Power of that braid is just unbelievable and abrasion resistance guarantees that every haul will end up well. Price to quality ratio is surprising and I am more than certain that this line will become a true emperor of a Polish market.
Here I would like to focus mostly on one item – the Bogey. Teaser type lures are well known to all catfish drift admirers. There are many interesting products available on the market, yet the Mikado Bogey, in my opinion, beats them all with ease. Why is that? Well, because the designers applied an innovative solution while making it, that turned out to work great. Body of the lure is divided into two, metal pieces: upper, heavier head and lighter bottom with rubber strings and beads. While led carefully, Bogey attracts fish with the beads; what really makes them go bonkers is the split body of the lure, though. When guided skilfully and certainly, Bogey’s head separates from the lower part and then strikes back, generating a strong impulse that fish can sense. We noticed multiple times, that even the laziest fish, whenever the Bogey was guided properly, were eager to attack it wildly. As if it was not enough, our Bogey was armed with the BKK Raptor-Z treble hooks – what a deadly combination… Available weights: 100, 140, 180, 250 g. There are 5 different colours, so it will cater for anyone. Obligatory item for any catfish drift enthusiast.
The Hooks and treble hooks
BKK Raptor-Z treble hooks and BKK Beastly Cat hooks… A few months ago, I created a long-read about them. We are taken aback by them and more than certain, that they will take the first spot among the catfish anglers. Every angler that pursues power, quality and reliability simply has to have them!
Remaining options, available in the range did not fail us either. I will not mention each and every single model individually, sorry for that. I would like to point out the Cat Territory Beader hooks available in sizes from 5/0 up to 10/00. Made with the self-hook system, those hooks have a shape that makes a fish usually strike itself. Those hooks did not fail us either and we were mostly using them in classic vertical with a fireball. Try them and you will not regret it.
Cat Territory BANG! Electronic strike indicators for stationary angling. Available in 2+1 version with a central unit; two more indicators can be purchased and added in order to create a 4+1 set. We were using them throughout the entire season. There were indifferent to the temperature, rain and treatment worthy of tired catfish angler. Three of their parameters can be adjusted: V – volume, S – sensitivity and T – tone. I am a person hard to wake up, yet trust me – those indicators could wake up a dead man. Another thing is a fact, that some of the equipment present on the market have sensitivity issues; signallers reacting to every single flick of a rod can drive you insane in no-time. In case of BANGs that issue does not exist. We set them up considering the wind, current and other conditions; when done correctly, such a setup grants lack of disruptions until a real strike. Oh, and batteries last long – it is handy as well. Much recommended.
Territory Catfish Buoy – I made quite a broad relation covering that topic – you can find it in the Mikado TV (Catfish Buoy basics – part 1,2 and 3) In many cases Mikado buoys saved the day. Their robust construction, adequate to the needs they fulfil, perfectly fits the equipment of a true catfish angler.
We impatiently await new projects, hoping that many of them will come and that the catfish section will grow enormously.
With warm, catfish’y regards
Mikado Fishing Team
